About Me
As a child, I was my fathers little shadow. He would never call a repairman for fix-it jobs around the house. Carpentry, plumbing, painting, tile, masonry, electrical, etc... he did it all. The funny thing is, that was not even his profession. Whatever dad was doing, I was right there out of interest and curiosity, watching and learning.
At the age of 12, he passed away. With the responsibility of home repairs left to my mother, I would notice different contractors she would hire to do the things my father had been doing since I can remember. They nowhere near had the talent, charisma, or the personality my father did. This left my mother, my family, the neighbors and myself feeling uncomfortable with them as tradesmen.
After numerous un-fulfilling experiences my mother and neighbors had been subjected to, I insisted that they allow me to try to do these tasks. At first they were reluctant. I assured my mother that I had watched my father enough times and paid attention in great detail. "I can do this, Mom". What finally convinced her were a couple of things, my attitude, willingness to try and the fact that I never gave up on a project.
The one thing that really caught her attention and became the deciding factor, was when I told her...."Please let me do it. If I mess it up, they sell things at the hardware store to fix it". That became my motto and I used that for every trade I chose to be involved with. After painting the house, inside and out, putting on a new roof, replacing water pipes under the house, replacing pipes inside shower wall and numerous drywall and carpentry repairs, the neighbors too, were convinced I knew what I was doing and had me do work for them. All this before I graduated from high school.
My father once told me, "John, everyday is a learning experience, learn as much as you can and the more you know....the more valuable you will become". At 12 years old, I had no clue what he was talking about. By the time I finished high school, I did. 27 years later, I have continued to provide service for those in need of my profession and have dedicated everyone of my jobs to the memory of my father who is responsible for putting the very first tool in my hand and teaching me how to use it.
Today, I continue to enjoy the work I do and the smiles of satisfaction on the faces of those I have provided service for.
I look forward to speaking with you today in regards to your next home project.
